Essential nutrient Essay Example

Essential nutrient Essay Example Essential nutrient Paper Essential nutrient Paper Nutrition plays a very important role in maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle and is especially important for young children. Many diseases can be reduced by looking at the nutrition label. For instance, one of the most common diseases among us today is diabetes which can be prevented by monitoring the amount of sugar intake. â€Å"A balanced diet can provide us with all the essential nutrients and minerals in order for growth and normal wear and tear on the body. † If I had to describe my eating habits, I would say I maintain a healthy balance. I eat three main meals a day consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a couple snacks throughout the day. I always look at the labels and determine which foods aren’t healthy. Also I watch my portion size as well. For beverages, I try to drink as much water as possible and I do not drink any soda or sugary drinks. However, I do drink tea and coffee in the morning. In general, I would say I maintain a well-balanced diet. After reviewing my Food Groups and Calories Report, I have determined I do not receive all the essential nutrients and vitamins I need on a daily basis. Even though I thought I maintained a healthy balance according the report I am not. For the following food groups; grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, protein foods, and oils I am under in every category except one in ounces. For example, the target amount of grains that is needed is 6 ounces while, I am only consuming 5 ounces. Therefore, I am under the targeted amount. Also I learned I lack a lot of fruits, vegetables, and dairy in my diet. I often don’t like a lot of vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. For the following food groups; grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, protein foods, and oils I was under the targeted amount of serving for almost everything except protein foods. In the grains category the targeted amount is 6 ounces while I only consumed 5 ounces. In the vegetables, fruits, oils and dairy categories I didn’t reach any of the targeted amounts. Although I did reach the targeted amount of protein foods which I consumed 11 ounces when the targeted amount is only 5 ounces. Based on my report, I will be modifying my diet in order to reach the essential nutrients and minerals. The steps I will take in order to modify my diet is to keep using the SuperTracker. This tool shows me the food group amount I need on a daily basis and how much I have already consumed. For starters, the first foods I am going to start incorporating into my diet that are full of nutrients are fruits and vegetables. Which would include; green beans, carrots, and raw fruit. Each nutrient plays a very important role in maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are six essential nutrients that we need on a daily basis which are; carbohydrates, lipids, protein, water, vitamins and minerals. According to my nutrients report, I am getting most of the six essential nutrients. One of the nutrients that I am taking a lot in of is proteins; this nutrient provides structure of the bones and teeth. Since I am getting most of the nutrients I am able to stay alive, grow, and reproduce. There are tons of benefits of getting all the essential nutrients needed in our diet. By changing my diet I will have more energy and maintain a healthy weight. Also by changing my diet I am ensuring that my body will maintain structure, maintain and repair the body as well as be able to reproduce. In conclusion, nutrients are a very important part of living a healthy lifestyle. Before this week, I was not aware of how much my diet lacks in the essential nutrients needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, I need to change my eating habits. By using the SuperTracker I was able to identify which nutrients I was getting enough of and the ones I was not getting enough of. Furthermore, by continuing to use this I will be able to monitor my food intake more closely and reach my goal of maintaining a healthier lifestyle. For and Against Criminal Justice Management Essay

For and Against Criminal Justice Management - Essay Example For and Against Criminal Justice Management In any species, whether among humans or lesser developed genus like mammals, reptiles, birds, and even insects, communication is seen as an essential component for survival and growth. The subject of the group discussion is criminal justice management (overview). â€Å"In its broadest terms, criminal justice management is defined as the management, supervision, and overseeing of the criminal justice system. The criminal justice system covers a broad range of areas of justice. It includes police departments, federal agencies, state agencies, the courts, and correctional facilities† (Strayer University 2011) The successful discussion will be referred to as Discussion A, and the unsuccessful one as Discussion B. The writer of this paper was the leader in Discussion A while remaining a participant in the other one. Welcome and thank you for agreeing to participate in this discussion. You are all aware (in different ways) about increasing crime rates in the country. But instead of just punishing the criminals, it is felt that a management system be effectively implemented so that criminals have a chance to get back into the mainstream society and also to prevent individuals with criminal intent (for whatever reasons) not to indulge in such activities. Before moving on to the actual discussion, let me just outline the roles to be played by each member. The three golden rules are listen to the speaker without any bias, not to whisper or talk to the person sitting next to you (for example, conspiring), and when required speak out your mind sincerely and boldly (Bulatao, 1999, 4). There are other do’s and don’ts that need to be followed (Ganguly, 2002). and I shall be strict with these guidelines. Intervention will be necessary if the discussion turns hostile or goes outside the topic. Do not go on repeating what you have once already said and please be sure that you have some facts and figures to back up your points. Participation and reciprocation and important and last but not least, be polite enough to thank the listeners at the beginning and end of your opinions. Being loud and aggressive will not be tolerated, and do not interrupt a person while he is speaking. Irrelevant questions, being depreciative, and exhibiting of emotional outbursts is not a accepted norm in group discussions. If you find another speaker putting across views in a better way, do not get nervous- either accept them or put across lucid and valid arguments as the case may be. I apologize for this long introduction, but hope I have made my points clear? The group as a whole – Yes Leader- Shall we then begin, ladies and gentlemen? Who shall speak first, how about you Ms D? Ms D – Okay. I feel that there are not enough policemen to control crime, especially by immigrants and b lacks in the country. Mr B – I object to that comment. Do you have any figures or even reasons for such a statement? Mr A – No. I am just stating from the information from the media. (The group members begin to talk themselves regarding this matter) Leader – Ladies and gentlemen, please, we are moving away from the core issue of the discussion. You have already forgotten what I

Preventing Animal Abuse

Preventing Animal Abuse 1. Introduction Animal abuse is the form of mistreatment of animal that is often falls into three  categories: neglect, intentionally and unintentionally. Firstly, failure to give  daily necessities to the animal such as food would be classified as neglect. Next,  for intentionally, these people abuse animal for entertainment purposes to earn  their daily expenses or for their own excitement and enjoyment. Some may even  inflict harm on the animal in order to feel more superior or gain control. Lastly,  for unintentionally, these people do not know what the correct ways to treat  animal or they do know that they were actually mistreating the animal. For  instance they felt that there is a need to beat their pets in order to discipline  them. (OntarioSPCA 2009). This report will show that animal abuse is not right hence the purpose of this report is to educate people the various measures preventing or minimising animal abuse. It also cover the different organizations that stop and prevent  animal abuse. 2. Reason to stop animal abuse Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit an act  of cruelty towards an animal don’t stop there. They are at a higher risk and  chance to commit property crime compared to those who do not have any  history of animal abuse (Goleman, 1991). Hence it is very important to stop  animal abuse so that crime rates will not further increase in the future. For  example there was an article stating that Carroll Edward Cole was a serial killer  had murdered as many as 35 women in the 1970s, and was executed in 1985. His first violent act was strangling a puppy (Newton, 2001). Eric Harris and  Dylan Klebod the Columbian High School shooters had bragged to friends  about injuring animals before murdering a total of 12 students and one teacher. On top of that, they set a bomb which could have wiped out 600 people (Cullen,  2004). Furthermore, the number of cases for animal abuse has increased to more  than 65% for the past five years, not to mention that it is wrong for people to abuse others especially animals who cannot even speak or defend for  themselves (Degenhardt, 2005). 3. Measures to stop animal abuse There are a few measures that can be taken to stop animal abuse. First of all,  schools must educate the younger ones the right way to treat animals as it is  important for people to have the right mentality towards how to treat animals  from young. School can do so by conducting lessons and invite organization  like SPCA to conduct talks about animal abuse (Drake, 2010). Empathize that  animal abuse is consider a crime in Singapore which people can be jailed up to  a year or fined ten thousand dollars or both (Tan, 2014).Next, the government  can also stiffen the penalties of animal abuse. With that, people will most likely  not repeat the same mistake as people do not want to experience the strict  penalties (Kim, 2010). Last but not least, before individual or family buy or  adopt a pets, they must think whether they are financially stable enough to own  a pet so that they will be able to provide their pets with daily necessities like  food. Furthermore, ow ning a pet need a lot of commitment, for instance owning  a puppy will need to have a commitment of 10 years or so. They need to think  whether they are mentally prepare to own a pets or it will lead to the neglecting  of animals and that is a form of animal abuse (ASPCA, n.d). 4. Organization that prevent animal abuse There have been different organization against the idea of animal abuse and  took measures to prevent it from happening. Some of the organizations are â€Å"The  American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty (ASPCA), Cats Welfare  Society (CWS) and Animal Concern Research Education Society (ACRES). These organization help to spread and inspire people around the world to stop  animal abuse through the internet and campaign. 4.1. American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty (ASPCA) The American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty (ASPCA) is the  first humane organisation in the Western Hemisphere. The ASPCA work  nationally to help animals from being abused, pass humane laws and share  resources with many shelter across the world. They operate in many  programme areas, such as Anti-Cruelty, Animal Health Service, Community  Outreach and Government Relationship. They help to legislate animal cruelty  laws by lobbying for stronger humane legislation nationwide (ASPCA, n.d). 4.2. Cat Welfare Society (CWS) The Cat Welfare Society (CWS) aims to promote a humane, responsible and  informed society in Singapore so that cat can be treated responsibility. They  actively promote sterilisation as a personal responsibility of cat owners to  prevent further population to increase instead of destruction. For instance  records have been showing that 13,000 community cats were put down every  year, and the root cause of the problem is that there were too many cats being  born. The CSW also work closely with all the Town Council, Housing  Development Board, National Environment Agency and Agri-food   Veterinary Authority of Singapore to resolve cat issues humanely. (CWS, n.d). 4.3. Animal Concern Research Education Society (ACRES) Animal Concern Research Education Society (ACRES) wanted to create a  world where animals are treated with compassion and respect and to improve  the living condition and welfare of animals in captivity. They also educate  people and the public to promote actively community involvement in the animal  protection movement. Furthermore they also strive towards synergistic  partnership with authorities and relative parties (Schweitzer, 2009). 5. Conclusion In conclusion, organizations and society have already started to take action  against animal abuse as research have shown that animal abuse have brought  about a negative impact to the people. Hence I think that animal abuse is wrong  and should be stop and prevented so that the number of case will not increase  any further. A Separate Peace :: essays papers

A Separate Peace A Separate Peace is a coming of age novel in which Gene, the main character, revisits his high school and his traumatic teen years. When Gene was a teen-ager his best friend and roommate Phineas (Finny) was the star athlete of the school. Gene was only a mediocre athlete and is always jealous of Finny. They form a Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session which includes jumping from a tree into a river as its initiation. Eventually, Finny falls from the tree fracturing his leg. This leads to Finny’s death and Gene struggle to find himself. The relationship between these two boys proves my thesis statement; a friend and an enemy can be one in the same. The characters of Gene and Finny are as opposite as apples and oranges. Finny is a free spirit and Gene enjoys structure. The main problem though, is that Finny has â€Å"some kind of hold†(9) over Gene. The fact that Gene lets Finny talk him into things troubles Gene. Therefore, when they form the Suicide Society and jump out of the tree it becomes destructive for Gene because he is cutting himself off from the structure that normally runs his life. With all the time commitments to Finny and the society Gene’s grades plummet. He forms the idea that, â€Å"Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies.†(45). Since academics are so important to Gene he begins to resent Finny and he feels that he has to get revenge. This anger leads to Gene jouncing Finny out of the tree. The tone of this story changes frequently. Its changes are bases mostly on Genes feelings toward Finny. Gene often has feeling of resentment and uncertainty about their friendship; this creates a negative tone. Finny on the other hand seems to make the mood somewhat whimsical. For example he beets the school swimming record without ever practicing. He also sneaks away to swim and sleep by the ocean. The tone in this novel is important to the theme because Gene longs to have that same whimsical way that Finny has. However, Gene can never accomplish this and he becomes very cynical at times. Symbolism is also very important to this novel. An example of this is the war; it symbolizes several different things. Finny explains to the head master that â€Å"We’re all getting ready for the war†(15)when asked why he was late for dinner.

Synthesis Paper

For example, Tony Parker is a good person with a good heart wherein he helps those needy people. This comes from his winnings against their past opponents giving support on their charity. The achievement is not only for him but also to those people who need their help. These traits are passing from one person to the other. It could be his son who will continue what he had started. When they grew up, they will know more about the things they haven't done and understand yet. One factor that a person had adapted is also from the environment, the people around who encourage them.Behavior involves responding to or interacting with the environment. The total response mechanism involves systems like the nervous system, glands, muscles and sense organs. The five senses, sense of sight, hear, smell, taste and touch; you will be able to do daily activities. For example, when you are blind you lost your sense of sight. So how could you identify things behind you or what will you do. This lack c an lead you to accidents. Sensation is the process by which our senses gather information and send it to the brain. It is a passive process of bringing information from the outside world into the DOD and to the brain. This works when the sensory organs absorb energy from a physical stimulus in the environment and sensory receptors convert this energy into neural impulses and send them to the brain. A large amount of information is being sensed at any one time such as room temperature, brightness of the lights, someone talking, a distant train, or the smell of perfume. With all this information coming into our senses, the majority of our world never gets recognized. We don't notice radio waves, x-rays, or the microscopic parasites crawling on our skin.We don't sense all the odors round us or taste every individual spice in our gourmet dinner. We only sense those things we are able too since we don't have the sense of smell like a bloodhound or the sense of sight like a hawk; our thres holds are different from these animals and often even from each other. Perception is the active process of selecting, organizing and interpreting the information brought to the brain by the senses. This works when the brain organizes the information and translates it into something meaningful. For example, when he/she is in pain, you comfort him/her.Why did you act like that? This only means that o are worried if something happens because you have a feeling of admiration. Your brain tells you to make him/her happy for him/her to be able to forget about it even for a day, much better for a lifetime. It may seem that learning and memory would be an easy thing to talk about since they're such universal phenomena. But because they're so universal many people often use different words to refer to the same thing and sometimes the same words to refer to different things. That can lead to a wealth of confusion.Learning is a durable change in behavior or knowledge due to experience. This act ually covers a lot of ground. For example, a guy watching a basketball strategy lessons so he can play well to impress girls. At first you don't want to learn more strategy on how to play a basketball but because it has an advantage, you are pursuing to learn. You ask guidance from your friends who knows how to play well or this way which is now commonly used preferably teenagers who were fun of watching videos on Youth. In this way it is easy for them to learn because there are many ways on how to do it.You learn when you really want too, especially when it gives you a pleasing resonantly and others do it for fame. Fame in which from the start they were craving but now they were masters. How will you able to learn when you're too lazy? Laziness is the most commonly reasons wherein they don't have learning specially students. How will you able to get good grades without learning. Types of learning aren't all the same, don't all use the same psychological processes or require the sam e parts of the brain, but they're still learning according to our definition.Memory means by which past experience is drawn on to guide or direct behavior or thoughts in the present. For example, an adult playing basketball and dribbling it like he did when he was a kid 20 years ago. Remembering this times make him remember the good times when he is still young. He could play with his friends at the streets during their free time. Taking a look at the past makes him happy, but there were also experiences which are suppose not to bring out anymore. It might be a painful past or a bad dream you have encountered. It's difficult when you lost your memory where in fact this is one of the most important things.Ever wonder why some people meme to be very successful, highly motivated individuals? Where does the energy, the drive, or the direction come from? Motivation is an area of psychology that has gotten a great deal of attention. You are motivated by your family, friends and of course God. For example, a guy who wants to play basketball. He plays because he was motivated by his friends to gain fame and impress someone whom he admires most. So he practices during his break time. Motivation helps you also gain self confidence facing unknown people around you. You also don't feel that tired and helpless. The reason is cause we all want to be successful, we all want direction and drive, and we all want to be seen as motivated. Consciousness is the awareness of external events, internal sensations, the self, and thoughts about experiences. The conscious state is a state of awareness where the mind knows exactly what it is thinking of. We can be highly conscious, or unconscious. We get drowsy as we wake up in the morning getting more aware of our thoughts and feelings. High-level of awareness in the conscious state involves controlled processing, where attention is most alert and selective, allowing us to focus.Sleeping is essentially important to us because our mental and physical functioning can deteriorate if we go without it for extended period. Our sleep and wakefulness are regulated in accordance with our external events. For example, you play basketball last day with your friends; you are really tired because you like your team to won against you're opponents because they were strong combination also. Because of that, you sleep early but wake up in the morning late. Your body needs rest to gain back the energy you had used the other day.Intelligence has been defined in many different ways such as n terms of one's capacity. It can also be more generally described as the ability to perceive and retain knowledge. For example, for your team to be able to win in a basketball, you and your teammates are supposed to have knowledge on how to do that or to do this especially defends and offensives. Within the discipline of psychology, various approaches to human intelligence have been adopted. The psychometric approach is especially familiar to the general public, as well as being the most researched and by far the most widely used in practical settings
